Madhubani painting, also called Mithila art, has been practised by the women of Bihar for generations, originally on the mud walls of homes during festivals and weddings, and now on paper, cloth and objects like these clocks. Its language is instantly recognisable — fine black outlines, dense fill patterns, and motifs drawn from nature and mythology, from the Matsya fish that symbolises fertility and abundance, to the peacock associated with Krishna and the arrival of the monsoon.
Henna art draws from a different but equally old tradition — the mehndi applied on hands during weddings and festivals across India. On these clocks, that same vocabulary of paisleys, florets and dotted borders is translated from skin to metal, hand-painted onto brass or copper sheet in fine black linework with white detailing, so the piece carries the same intricate, celebratory quality as a bride's mehndi design.
