Description

Copper has moved through Indian homes for millennia — in vessels, in temple lamps, in the water we're told to drink for good health. Here, it becomes the canvas for another old tradition: Madhubani, Bihar's folk art of fish, fertility and abundance.

Two large fish arc toward the centre, two smaller ones echo them below, every scale and fin picked out in fine black linework directly on the copper sheet. In Indian iconography, a pair of fish is itself an auspicious motif, associated with prosperity and good fortune — a detail worth knowing if this is headed to someone starting a new home.

The copper sheet is backed onto a solid wood panel and fitted with a working clock movement, so the piece holds its shape and function well beyond a typical decorative object. Over time, copper develops a soft patina that only deepens its character — expect the surface to warm and shift subtly with age and handling, the same way an old copper lota does.
