Theyyam Heads

Theyyam Heads

Theyyam is Kerala's most visceral and spiritually charged ritual art form - a tradition of possession ritual and performance that takes place at temple festivals across northern Kerala, particularly in the Malabar region, where performers are believed to become the deities they embody. What distinguishes Theyyam visually from every other Indian performance tradition is its extraordinary headdress and face painting: towering, architecturally complex crowns in red, gold, and black; intricate facial patterns that transform the performer into something beyond human; and an intensity of colour and form that carries divine authority rather than mere theatrical effect.

At EthniiChic, we bring the visual power of Theyyam into hand-painted sculptural heads - wall-displayed pieces that carry the iconic face painting, colour palette, and sacred iconography of specific Theyyam deities, rendered by our studio artists with genuine understanding of the tradition's visual grammar. These are not decorative masks. They are cultural artefacts in sculptural form - collector's pieces for anyone who has witnessed Theyyam and carries it with them, or for anyone drawn to Kerala's spiritual art traditions and seeking to bring that intensity into their home in its most authentic form.
