Description

Among the animal figures included in the traditional set of Cheriyal masks, the tiger is one of the more dramatic — bold striping, bared teeth, an expression built for impact rather than subtlety, in keeping with a craft whose masks were originally designed to be read clearly from a distance during a village storytelling performance. Made in Cheriyal village, near Warangal in Telangana, this mask carries the same roughly 400-year-old technique behind it, a tradition recognised with a Geographical Indication tag in 2010.

The base is built from tamarind seed paste and sawdust over a wooden core, shaped and dried over several days, coated in white lime, and then hand-painted using natural pigments, the artist working in the stripe pattern and facial detail freehand with a fine brush. This process, unchanged for generations, is now practised by only a small number of Nakashi families in the village.

With its bold striping and dramatic expression, this mask works well as a standalone statement piece rather than needing a pair to complete it, suited to an entryway, a study, or any wall that can carry a single bold folk-art accent.
