Mysore painting developed under the patronage of the Wodeyar kings of Karnataka, recognisable by its calm, gently rounded figures, delicate linework and a soft, restrained colour palette quite different from the bolder, flatter styles found further north and east. This box renders Saraswathi, goddess of knowledge and the arts, with that same quiet, composed expression, set against a rich green ground.

Our artists paint the goddess's form freehand, drawing on the Mysore tradition's characteristic gentleness of line and expression rather than its more elaborate temple and canvas techniques — the result here is a flat, hand-painted finish rather than the raised gesso-and-gold-leaf work seen in larger devotional Mysore paintings.
