Description

In the temple town of Nathdwara, Rajasthan, artists have for generations painted grand cloth hangings called Pichwai to be hung behind the idol of Shrinathji — the seven-year-old form of Krishna worshipped there. Aradhana, meaning devotion or worship, takes its name and its imagery from that tradition, picturing Shrinathji surrounded by his beloved Gopis in a scene of quiet reverence.

Pichwai painting is built in layers: a cloth or panel base, natural pigments applied in fine detail, and motifs drawn from the temple's own visual vocabulary — lotuses chief among them, believed to be the Lord's favourite flower, framing the sides of this box in a border of devotion.
