Description

The Cheriyal mask-making tradition of Telangana has always leaned on strong, saturated colour — reds, ochres, deep greens — so a soft peach pair is something of a departure, closer to the first light of dawn than to a festival crowd. It's a colour choice that lets the craft's other qualities come forward: the raised, sculptural quality of the face, the fine black outlining, the exaggerated features that were originally designed to read clearly from a distance when Chindu storytellers held these masks up before a gathered audience.

Nothing about the process changes for a softer palette. Artisans in and around the village of Cheriyal, roughly 100 kilometres from Hyderabad, still build the mask over a wooden base using tamarind seed paste and sawdust, dry it over several days, seal it with a white lime coat, and hand-paint every detail with natural pigments — a method that earned the craft its Geographical Indication tag in 2010 and that only a small number of Nakashi families continue to practise today.

This particular pair, in its gentler tone, works well in a bedroom, a nursery-adjacent wall, or any pastel-leaning interior where a bold red or orange mask would feel too loud, while still bringing genuine handcraft and cultural weight to the room.

Material: Tamarind seed powder, sawdust, cotton cloth, natural colours

Dimensions: 5 inches x 5 inches x 3 inches (pair)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is peach a traditional Cheriyal colour?
The traditional palette leans toward stronger, saturated tones, so a soft peach is a more contemporary interpretation — the making process itself, however, follows the same centuries-old technique.

What are the two faces in the pair?
A male and a female face, each with distinct headgear and jewellery detailing, meant to be hung as a set.

How is it mounted on the wall?
Each mask has a loop fixed at the back for direct hanging on a nail or hook.

How do I keep the colour from fading?
Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and moisture, and dust it gently with a dry, soft cloth rather than using any liquid cleaner.

Is it fragile?
The base is a sturdy, dried tamarind-sawdust composite, but like any handcrafted natural-material piece, it should be handled gently and kept away from impact or damp conditions.

Would this suit a nursery or a young person's room?
Its soft tone works well in a nursery-adjacent or pastel-themed room, though as with any wall-mounted décor, it should be placed out of a young child's direct reach.
