Artisans build the mask's base from tamarind seed paste and sawdust over a wooden frame, drying it over several days before applying a white lime coat and then painting the facial features and jewellery detail entirely by hand, using natural pigments and a fine brush for the line work. It's a slow process, and one now kept alive by only a small number of families in the village who still work in these exact materials rather than moving to moulded or printed alternatives.
