Description

There is a particular shade of orange-brown that only shows up in old temple courtyards at dusk, when the laterite stone has been warmed by an entire day of sun. This Small Nandi is painted in exactly that tone. His body is a deep, earthen rust, his saddle cloth picked out in bottle green and maroon, his hooves finished in black with a fine gold line at the ankle. He sits low and rounded, front legs folded beneath him, in the eternal posture of waiting that gives Nandi his meaning.

Nandi is Shiva's bull and closest companion, and in Indian iconography he is almost never shown standing or moving. He waits, facing the sanctum, because waiting with full attention is considered its own form of devotion. Our artisans carve this piece from solid mango wood before hand-painting the terracotta base coat and layering in the gold detailing on the collar and blanket by brush, freehand, without stencils. No two Nandis leave the studio looking identical because no two brush hands move the same way twice.

At this size, he is made for the spaces that need warmth rather than scale — a study shelf, a puja alcove, the corner of a console table where morning light lands first. He also travels well as a gift for a housewarming, a birthday, or simply for someone who keeps a small altar and would rather have something hand-painted than mass-produced sitting on it.

Material: Solid Mango Wood, hand-painted and hand-distressed for an antique finish.

Dimension: 10 inches (L) x 3.75 inches (B) x 7.5 inches (H). Weight: 2 kgs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Nandi sculpture entirely hand-painted?

Yes. Every layer of colour, from the base coat to the fine gold linework on the collar and saddle, is applied by hand by our studio artists. Expect small, natural variations in brushstroke — that is the mark of handwork, not a flaw.

Where should I place a Nandi sculpture at home?

Traditionally Nandi faces the deity he serves, so many customers place him facing a puja corner or a Shiva idol. Outside of ritual use, he works beautifully on a console table, bookshelf, or study desk as a grounding, meditative piece.

What is Nandi a symbol of?

Nandi represents devoted waiting, focus, and unwavering attention — considered one of the highest virtues in Indian spiritual thought. He is also seen as a guardian figure, watching over the home.

Is this a good housewarming or gifting piece?

Yes, Nandi sculptures are a popular housewarming gift in Indian tradition, believed to bring calm and protective energy into a new home.

How do I clean and maintain a hand-painted wooden sculpture?

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Keep it away from direct sunlight and damp areas to preserve the hand-painted finish over time.

Will the piece I receive look exactly like the photograph?

It will be true to the design, colours, and finish shown, though as a hand-painted piece, very slight variations in brushstroke or tone are natural and part of its handmade character.
