Cow Cheriyal Mask – Hand-painted Telangana Folk Art

Not every Cheriyal mould is a deity or a mythological figure — among the twenty-odd traditional face masks still used in the village of Cheriyal, near Warangal in Telangana, several are pulled straight from rural life itself: village women, farmers, and animals like cows and tigers, characters that would have appeared in the everyday, non-mythological scenes of a Chindu ballad performance. This cow mask belongs to that pastoral side of the tradition, one that sits alongside the deity masks rather than beneath them.

The mask is built the same way every Cheriyal piece is: a wooden core shaped with tamarind seed paste and sawdust, dried over several days, coated in white lime, then hand-painted with natural pigments, the artist working the eyes, ears, and decorative markings with a fine brush. This is a craft the Nakashi community has practised for roughly 400 years, recognised with a Geographical Indication tag in 2010, and now kept alive by only a small number of families.

Given the cow's place in Indian rural and cultural life, this mask suits anyone drawn to folk art rooted in everyday village imagery rather than exclusively religious iconography, and works well as a standalone accent piece on a gallery wall of varied folk pieces.
