This is a snake boat, or chundan vallam, the vessel at the heart of Kerala's most famous water tradition, carved here in miniature as a hand-painted wooden tray with four open compartments running down its centre. The border is worked in bold orange scrollwork against black lacquer, a palette pulled directly from Kerala Mural painting.

Snake boat races, or Vallam Kali, are among Kerala's most celebrated cultural events, held during Onam and other festivals, when entire villages compete along the backwaters.
