Description
Same warm orange-red skin, two completely different faces built on top of it. One is all scrollwork — maroon-red swirls curling across the cheeks toward a gold medallion at the brow. The other trades scrollwork for structure: fine dotted arcs ringing the eyes, floral medallions on the cheeks, and a gold beaded arc standing in for a mouth. Mounted side by side on plain black rectangular bases, the pair reads less like a matched set than two performers caught mid-character.
Theyyam draws on an enormous vocabulary of facial motifs to distinguish one deity from another, from scrollwork and swirl patterns to dotted eye-framing and floral medallions, and this pair puts two different approaches from that vocabulary side by side. Each head is individually hand-carved from solid wood and hand-painted by our studio artisans, with the scrollwork on one and the dotted, floral detailing on the other worked independently to preserve each design's own character.
