Description

The zigzag column drop earring is one of the most spatially inventive forms in the Kemp earring tradition. The body is not simply a flat pendant — it is a column with alternating diagonal directions, each diagonal creating a diamond-shaped negative space between the column's edges, giving the body a three-dimensional visual quality despite being cut from flat wood. The upward arrow tab at the top gives the earring a deliberate directional intention: pointing upward toward the fitting, downward toward the pendant.

This zigzag column design carries the ruby-emerald mixed Kemp palette in its pendant cluster. The lower rectangular pendant section holds a dense cluster of Kemp stones in which ruby-red rounds are the dominant colour, with emerald green stones distributed through the cluster as accent. The distribution is deliberate — not random — so that the cluster has a visual rhythm between warm and cool. Below the cluster, three pearl drops hang from the pendant's base.

The ruby-emerald-pearl combination in the pendant section is the Kemp tradition's most complete colour statement: the warmth of ruby, the abundance of emerald, the purity of pearl. These three materials appear together in the ceremonial jewellery of South Indian temples, in the necklaces worn by Bharatanatyam dancers, and in the bridal jewellery of communities across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. The pendant section of these earrings carries all three in a format that sits below the geometric column.

These drop earrings are suited to Onam, to South Indian weddings, and to any occasion where the full visual vocabulary of the South Indian jewellery tradition is appropriate.

MaterialPre-engineered engineered wood (zigzag column, diamond cutout, upward arrow tab), non-toxic pigments. Mixed ruby-emerald kemp stone cluster in gold-toned settings. Three pearl drop dangles. Fish-hook fitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What are Kemp earrings and where do they come from?

Kemp earrings are a form of South Indian traditional jewellery taking their name from the Kannada word for ruby. The style originates in South Indian temple jewellery and classical dance costume — historically worn by Bharatanatyam dancers, gifted at major South Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. Traditional Kemp jewellery uses genuine rubies and emeralds in gold settings. Contemporary Kemp jewellery, including EthniiChic's hand-painted collection, uses high-quality synthetic ruby-red and emerald-green stones in gold-toned settings on painted wooden bases — maintaining the visual tradition at an accessible point.

Q2. What makes EthniiChic's Kemp earrings different from conventional Kemp jewellery?

EthniiChic's Kemp earrings are made on a hand-painted engineered wood base rather than a metal base. This means each earring is painted by hand before the Kemp stones are set — the painting giving the earring its ground, its colour character, and its folk art identity. The combination of hand-painting and Kemp stone setting on a single earring surface is specific to EthniiChic and is not found in conventional Kemp jewellery studios, where the base is typically metal and unpainted. The painted wood base also makes EthniiChic's earrings significantly lighter than metal Kemp earrings of comparable visual size.

Q3. Are the Kemp stones in EthniiChic earrings genuine rubies and emeralds?

No. As with all contemporary Kemp jewellery in the Indian market, the stones are high-quality synthetic or glass stones that replicate the appearance of rubies and emeralds. Genuine rubies and emeralds are not used. This is standard practice across the contemporary Kemp jewellery category and is what makes Kemp jewellery accessible in weight and cost while maintaining the visual tradition of the original temple jewellery art form.

Q4. How are EthniiChic Kemp earrings made?

Each earring begins with a pre-engineered wood base cut to the earring's specific shape — teardrop, diamond, zigzag column, crescent, half-moon, or other form. The base is then hand-painted with non-toxic pigments by an artist in Bangalore. Once the painting is complete, Kemp stone components are set individually by hand in gold-toned fittings. Earring findings are fitted. No two pieces are exactly identical because every painting is applied by hand.

Q5. Are EthniiChic Kemp earrings suitable for daily wear?

The stud designs in this collection — including the teardrop studs, crescent moon studs, trapezoid studs, kite studs, and half-moon studs — are sized and weighted for daily wear. They are compact, sit close to the ear, and are light enough for extended wear. The drop and column designs are better suited for festive, evening, or special occasion wear. All designs are made on lightweight engineered wood, which is more comfortable for extended wear than metal earrings of comparable size.

Q6. How long does it take for EthniiChic Kemp earrings to ship?

All in-stock Kemp earrings ship within 4 to 5 business days from Bangalore. For international orders — NRI buyers in the US, UK, UAE, Canada, Australia, and other countries — please email contactus@ethniichic.com or WhatsApp +91 99002 38882 before placing your order to confirm shipping rates and delivery timelines to your location.

Q7. How do I care for hand-painted Kemp earrings?

Keep the earrings away from water — do not submerge or wet the painted wood base. Avoid contact with perfume, hairspray, or oils directly on the earring surface. Store in the earring pouch or box provided, away from direct sunlight. Kemp stone settings are hand-set — protect from impact. Pearl drops and pearl borders, where present, should be kept away from perfume and oils. With basic care, both the painted surface and the stone settings will remain intact for years of regular wear.

Q8. Can I order EthniiChic Kemp earrings as a gift?

Yes. EthniiChic Kemp earrings are a popular gifting choice for Onam, Navaratri, Diwali, South Indian weddings, and Ganesh Chaturthi. They are lightweight and pack well, making them practical for gifting within India and for NRI buyers gifting internationally. Each pair carries a cultural story — handcrafted in Bangalore, rooted in South Indian temple jewellery — that adds meaning to the gift. For corporate bulk gifting or customised orders, please contact contactus@ethniichic.com.

Q9. Do you offer custom Kemp earring designs?

Yes. EthniiChic accepts custom orders for Kemp earrings including specific colour combinations, custom shape
requests, and bespoke motif paintings. Please contact EthniiChic via the Contact Us page or WhatsApp (+91 99002 38882) with your requirements. Custom orders typically require a lead time of 2 to 3 weeks depending on the complexity of the design.

Q10. What occasions are Kemp earrings appropriate for?

Kemp earrings are traditionally associated with South Indian classical dance performances, temple festivals, Onam, Navaratri, Ugadi, Pongal, South Indian weddings, and formal cultural occasions. The stud designs in the EthniiChic collection are appropriate for daily ethnic wear and professional settings. The drop and column designs are
suited to festive and evening occasions. EthniiChic Kemp earrings are also popular as bridal jewellery accessories and return gifts.

Q11. Can EthniiChic Kemp earrings be worn with fusion outfits?

Yes. Several designs are specifically suited for fusion dressing — including the Black White Chevron Bar Drop earrings, which combine a contemporary graphic pattern with a traditional Kemp pendant, and the geometric spiral and diamond designs, which have a clean, modern visual quality that pairs well with contemporary ethnic and fusion outfits. The stud formats are compact enough to work with a wide range of styling contexts including western and fusion dressing.

Q12. Are all EthniiChic Kemp earrings one of a kind?

Yes, in the most meaningful sense. Because every earring base is hand-painted and every stone is set by hand, no two pairs are exactly identical even when the design is the same. The natural variation in how paint applies to a wooden surface, the slight differences in how each stone is positioned — these are the marks of handcraft. They are
what you are paying for when you choose a hand-painted Kemp earring over a printed or machine-produced alternative.
