Description
A Cheriyal mask pair is, by design, two halves of one piece — a male face and a female face, meant to be hung together rather than singly — which makes the two-tone version something of a small metaphor for a shared household, one warm shade and one cooler shade sitting side by side on the same wall. Here, yellow takes the lead with lilac as its companion tone, made by Nakashi artisans in the village of Cheriyal near Warangal in Telangana, using a mask-making process close to 400 years old and recognised with a Geographical Indication tag in 2010.
Both masks are hand-built from tamarind seed paste and sawdust over a wooden core, dried over several days, coated in white lime, and hand-painted with natural pigments, the fine linework picking out jewellery and headgear detail on each face individually. It's the same slow, hand-led process once used to make the masks that travelling storytellers held aloft during performances of religious ballads and folklore, sustained today by only a small number of families still working the craft.
