Description

The arch is one of the most sacred shapes in Indian sacred architecture. Temple gopurams narrow to an arch at their base; shrine doorways are framed by arch-shaped torana; the niche that holds a deity in a temple wall is always arch-shaped — the flat bottom representing the earth, the curve above representing the cosmic vault. This pendant takes that shape directly.

The fan arch — a flat-bottomed D-shape — gives the Kerala Mural composition inside it generous room. The female deity face is painted on a blue background, the headdress composed of orange-red Mural style elements with lotus leaf details at either side. Small red bead drops are arranged along the bottom edge of the arch and at its side points, giving the pendant its own peripheral fringe of detail before the chain even begins.

The chain is elaborately constructed: red and pink faceted stone beads in a graduated arrangement, connected by sections of gold serpentine chain link, with turquoise accent beads placed at intervals before a pair of antique gold filigree caps attach to the pendant. The combination of pink, gold, and turquoise against the deep blue and orange of the pendant makes this necklace feel distinctly festive — the kind of piece worn on an occasion where the jewellery is meant to be noticed.
