Kerala Mural Hand-Painted Filigree Round Pendant Necklace – Krishna Blue Face
Description
The filigree — intricate openwork carved or cut from a material to create a lace-like pattern — is one of the oldest decorative techniques in Indian jewellery. Gold filigree work from Odisha's Cuttack, silver filigree from Rajasthan, and the carved wooden filigree frames of South Indian temple architecture all share the same visual idea: a dense, interlocking pattern that frames what it surrounds with an air of sacred formality.
This pendant brings that frame to a round wooden piece. The outer ring of the pendant is cut in a gold-toned filigree pattern — an openwork lace border surrounding the painted central medallion. The medallion itself carries a Kerala Mural blue-faced deity, identified as Krishna by the complexion and the teal ground behind the figure. The orange and gold headdress petal crown rises above the blue face in the classic Kerala Mural male deity iconography.
The filigree frame is structural — it is cut from the same wooden base as the painted medallion, not applied separately. This means the pendant has a delicate outer ring that is genuinely three-dimensional, not a flat print of a filigree pattern. On the body, the filigree ring catches light differently from the painted surface inside it, creating a subtle architectural quality.
The chain is black rope with peach/salmon round beads, small black accent beads, and gold round beads — a warm, muted chain that does not compete with the pendant's detail. The peach tone connects to the warm complexion of the painted deity face and to the gold of the filigree frame, creating a restrained but considered palette.
