Kerala Mural Hand-Painted Filigree Round Pendant Necklace – Gold Frame Jade Chain
Description
The kirtimukha — the 'face of glory' medallion that appears above temple doorways across South India — is one of the most architecturally significant motifs in Hindu sacred art. Its circular form with scroll and leaf arms radiating outward has appeared on temple gopurams, on processional jewellery, and in the decorative vocabulary of South Indian craft for over a thousand years. This pendant brings that architectural form to a wearable scale.
The outer frame of this round pendant extends into scroll and leaf arms that radiate beyond the central circle, giving the pendant the shape of a sun or stylised kirtimukha medallion. The painted Kerala Mural deity at the centre — blue-faced, on a gold/yellow background — is framed by this elaborate structure in a way that gives the composition ceremonial weight. Blue against gold reads as royal and devotional; the warm background makes the deity's features luminous against the gold ground.
The filigree frame is cut from the same wooden base as the painted surface — it is structural, genuinely three-dimensional, and part of the object rather than a decorative addition. The scroll arms add surface complexity and catch light at angles the flat painted surface does not, creating a pendant that changes character in different lighting.
The yellow jade and red coral bead chain maintains the warmth. Yellow jade — the honey-warm stone used in Indian jewellery as a symbol of well-being — alternates with red coral rounds, which have been used in South Indian temple jewellery and devotional beadwork for centuries. The chain carries the warmth of the gold-framed pendant into the natural materials at the wearer's collarbone.
