Ganesha, remover of obstacles and the deity most commonly invoked at the start of anything new, is a natural fit for the Cheriyal mask tradition, where this mask sits among the most requested in the roughly 400-year-old craft practised by Nakashi artisans in Cheriyal village, near Warangal in Telangana. Traditionally, an image of Ganesha is one of the first things placed in a new home, and this mask offers that same auspicious presence in a hand-painted folk art form.

Built the same way every mask in this tradition is made, the base is shaped from tamarind seed paste and sawdust over a wooden core, dried across several days, coated in white lime, and hand-painted using natural pigments, with the trunk, ears, and jewellery detail all worked in by hand. This craft was awarded a Geographical Indication tag in 2010, and today survives through only a small number of practising families.
