This is a single hand-carved Gambhira wall mask, made in tribute to the centuries-old Bengali tribal dance tradition, now kept alive by only a handful of families. Unlike a face-only mask, this piece is carved as a full figure — a calm, closed-eyed face with a bindi at the brow, framed by deeply grooved hair swept up into a peak, giving way below the shoulders to a diamond-patterned torso and a fully carved, scaled tail with a fin curving out at the base. The effect is closer to a carved matsya kanya — Sanskrit for "fish-maiden," the closest Indian equivalent to what's known in the West as a mermaid — than a traditional mask.
