Why "Silk, Bronze, and Stone" Isn't Just a Turn of Phrase

Chennai's reputation for discerning craft has real historical weight behind it. Tamil Nadu's bronze casting tradition — the Chola bronzes, most famously the dancing Nataraja form of Shiva — is still practised today using the same lost-wax (cire perdue) technique, by hereditary artisan families known as Stapathis, particularly around Swamimalai. Kanchipuram silk is one of India's most recognised textile traditions, and Mahabalipuram's stone carving heritage is UNESCO-recognised. EthniiChic doesn't work in silk, bronze, or stone directly — this collection is hand-painted wood — but that same regional standard for craftsmanship done properly is exactly what this page is measured against.

Golu — Chennai's Own Doll Tradition, in Collector's Form

Golu, also called Bommai Golu or Kolu, is a genuinely Tamil Nadu tradition (also practised in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, but most closely associated with Tamil Nadu specifically): an odd-numbered stepped display, most often nine steps for the nine days of Navaratri, arranging figurines of deities, mythological scenes, and everyday life, with a decorated water jar representing the goddess placed on the bottom step. It's as much a storytelling tradition as a decorative one — each figure and scene has meaning, and the steps themselves are read as a metaphor for life's spiritual progression.
