Ethnic Indian Mask

Ethnic Indian Mask

The mask, in Indian tradition, is never just a face. It is a character, a deity, a demon, a hero - condensed into pigment and wood, worn during ritual performance to temporarily embody something larger than the wearer.

EthniiChic's mask collection draws from four of India's most distinct performance traditions: Theyyam from Kerala's northern coast, where masked ritual reaches near-divine intensity; Yakshagana from coastal Karnataka, where theatre and mythology collide in elaborate nocturnal performances; Cheriyal from Telangana, where the mask carries the bold palette of a 400-year-old scroll painting tradition; and Gambhira from the Malda district of West Bengal, where hand-carved wooden masks - crowned in three dimensions, painted in vivid devotional colour, have been used for over two centuries to embody Shiva and the characters of his mythology.

Each mask in this collection is hand-painted, no two are identical. Hung on a wall, they function as statement art that carries a story most décor cannot. The detail holds up at close range. The presence holds a room. That's the point.
